El Paredon, a surf camp on the Pacific coast that our friend Nick recommended we check out, was our next destination. We decided to take the chicken bus adventure, which consisted of two bus transfers with actual chickens on the bus, a tuk tuk ride, a boat ride through some mangroves and then a short walk to a location with no signs on the beach. El Paredon was gorgeous and very relaxing with good waves and dark black beaches. Rafael, the owner and surf instructor, was very helpful and friendly – in fact, he and his surf assistants taught so well, I was up on my feet on the first wave. We had a blast, though our trip was cut short due to an illness that robbed me of most of my energy. Because it was a waste to be at a surf camp without the energy to paddle out or catch a wave too many times, we left a day early. Rafael was very understanding, and offered to give us a ride back to Antigua since he coincidentally was heading out that same day. He dropped us off in the center of Antigua and we caught a direct shuttle to Lake Atitlan within a very short time.
