Last Saturday after our regular 6 pm dinner, a group of us from the farm hit the town of La Flor (pop ~ 2000) to see what kind of nightlife it had to offer. The local hang-out is a restaurant/bar at the top of the hill and offers dinner, drinks, live music, and karaoke most Saturday nights. The main entertainer was a Ranchero decked out in a white pantsuit with silver and black embroidery, an extravagant belt buckle, boots, and a large matching sombrero with a demeanor totally in sync with his outfit. He sang cumbia, ranchero, and merengue songs to a karaoke machine playing in the background while walking around the dance floor and serenading the crowd. A large screen playing music videos, which were not related to the songs being played on the machine, was prominently displayed on the dance floor.
We all drank some Imperials (local beer) and chatted it up with the other volunteers, workers from the farm, and their family members. When the Ranchero would pause and play all types of music ranging from cumbia to techno to 90s, everyone would hit the dance floor. Our dance lessons at the farm came in handy and Eric and I danced to just about every song (well, every song where there were others on the dance floor :)) . I think this place would do quite well in Comanche :). It was a great experience getting to go out in small town Costa Rica to a non-touristy place.
